About

Welcome to my Art Orijin website. This is where I showcase a selection of my personal photography, collected since 1999. It's an ongoing project, as more photographs are added — both old and new. This website offers me a place to exhibit and sell, both crucial for an independent artist who currently has little means for gallery shows in this difficult economic climate.

A bit of history about myself: my name is Norm Yip. I studied and worked as an architect for a number of years before realizing that line of work wasn't what my heart was seeking. So in 1999, while I was in Hong Kong, I made the decision to leave architecture behind and pursue a career in art and photography. It was then that I began to feel alive and connected to the deeper meaning of what I was supposed to do. I flourished, both creatively and personally.

For 27 years, my life in Hong Kong defined who I was. It was exciting — there was never a dull moment. But change is inevitable, and I returned to my Canadian roots in 2021 to care for my aging mother. Everything was turned on its head. A new life began, as a caregiver.

These have been tumultuous years, and obstacles have not been few. On occasion I've managed to paint in the basement, but photography proved easier and more efficient, and asked less of my already-exhausted body. As such, of the portfolios on this website are of flowers and landscapes, devoid of people. I've found the greatest comfort in nature — though it can be cruel and harsh, when you truly observe the act of growth and decay within an hour, a day, a week, or a season.
